Phelps advanced to the 200 meters butterfly final on Tuesday, an event he has dominated in the last few years.
Any medal in this event will uplift him equal the Olympic record tally of 18 medals made by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina. If Michael Phelps wins the event, he will become the first male swimmer to lift the gold medal in the same individual event at three consecutive Olympics.
Michael Phelps is all set to add to his 18-medal tally soon after as he competes in 4x200 freestyle relay, for which the United Stated are the favored to win the gold medal.
