West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that her party will support United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the post of the President of India.
Coming to this conclusion was painful......but we don’t want to waste our vote; so we have decided to vote for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) nominee Pranab Mukherjee in the July 19 Presidential election, told to reporters while addressing a press conference at Writers' Building in Kolkata.
However she didn’t revealed her cards on the Vice-Presidential election.
“We wanted Dr. Kalam as President, but we dont have any option, but to vote for Pranab Mukherjee”, Mamta added.
“I have already informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about our decision to support Pranab Mukherjee”
Shortly therafter, Mr. Mukherjee called on Ms. Banerjee to thank her.
The number game seems to be favouring Pranab Mukherjee after Trinamool declared its support. The Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, Communist Party of India-Marxist, All India Forward Bloc, Janata Dal-United and Shiv Sena have also expressed their support for him.
