New Delhi, March 12: No one goes into politics to get rich, but politicians happen to be some of the wealthiest figures around the globe. And in this list we have our own Mrs G ala high command. With net worth spread over two sets of widely spaced figures ($2-19 billion), the whole thing is shrouded in mystery.
According to a German newspaper Die Welt's World's Luxury Guide list of the world's richest politicians, Sonia Gandhi is 4th richest politician with wealth in range of $2 to 19 billion.
With no viable source of money as she is not into any business except that she belongs to the Indian First Political Family, the questions are many. Sonia Gandhi, wife of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is currently holding the position of President, Indian National Congress.
She, popular in political circle as 'Madam', refused to be Prime Minister after the 2004 Parliamentary election and forwarded the renowned economist and reformist Manmohan Singh for the Prime Ministership. However, she hold immense power in terms of influencing the policy making as no decision, whether executive or non-executive, is taken without her concent.
Originally from Italy, Mrs Gandhi is the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, the assassinated former prime minister.
King of Saudi Arabia Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz hold the No. 1 position with net worth of over $21 billion, followed by Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah with wealth of over $20 billion. Next most richest politician in the list is Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg with wealth of $18.1 billion.
Die Welt's World's Luxury Guide prepared the list based on OpenSecrets.org, Forbes.com, Bloomberg.com, Wikipedia.org, Guardian.co.uk.
As it is the first such report that valued Sonia Gandhi's wealth, it is bound to get strong reaction from Congress Party as well as from the government.
