New Delhi, Feb 18: India has voted in support of a UN Resolution condemning all types of violence and violation of human rights and calling for a Syrian-led inclusive process to end the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the West Asian country.
The wordings of the Resolution, adopted on Thrusday night, were more or less similar to the one vetoed by China and Russia earlier in current month.
India's Permanent Representative to the UN,Hardeep Puri, said in an explanation of vote that a political process for resolution of the ongoing crisis must be led by the Syrians themselves.
''We believe that the main role of the international community, including this Assembly, is to facilitate engagement of the Syrian Government with all sections of Syrian society for an inclusive political process, taking into account the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians while ensuring respect for the country's independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.''
Puri has expressed his support for steps of the League of Arab States in resolving the current Syrian crisis. The Arab League was an important regional organization, so it must play its required and historic role in promoting political dialogue among the Syrian groups, he said.
''Our support for the resolution adopted by this Assembly today is in accordance with our support for the efforts by the Arab League for a peaceful resolution of the crisis through a Syrian-led inclusive political process,'' said Mr Puri.
The UN support for the League’s decision to facilitate a Syrian-led political transition to a democratic, pluralistic political system, has been rejected by Syria and its Representative in UN Bashar Ja’afari has told the Resolution as ''biased.'' However, India said it had taken notice of the fact that the resolution just adopted expressly reaffirms that every nations must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country or act in any other way inconsistent with the purposes of the UN.
Mr Puri said, ''We strongly condemn all violence, irrespective of whoever the perpetrators are. We also condemn all violations of human rights. India holds the rights of expression and peaceful assembly among the fundamental values that should be respected, while ensuring stability and security of society.'' While supporting the Resolution, Mr Puri expressed ''regret at the procedure followed in this Assembly during the week in discussing the situation in Syria.''
''Exceptions to establish procedures are best avoided maintaining the credibility of any institution. Also, it would do us immense good if there is greater readiness from all quarters to negotiate a text with a view to reaching a consensus,'' he said.
