New Delhi, Aug 17: Recently appointed Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has dubbed as rumors of targeted attack on people from North Eastern in the State of Karnataka.
''I request the nation through you, don't spread such rumors... there is peace, all steps have been taken. Strict action will be taken against people who are spreading such rumors,'' Mr Shinde told media outside parliament house.
Home Minister comment came after over 6,000 people from the northeast are reported to have fled Bangalore Wednesday night amid intense rumors that they could be targeted like some of their compatriots in Mumba and Pune in the aftermath of recent riots in Assam .
Earlier on Thursday, Home Secretary R K Singh assured all types of safety to the people of the northeast, saying there was no threat to them in any part of the country.
The situation was seriously looked by the Union government with PM Manmohan Singh speaking to Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar , who in his Independence Day address assured people from the Northeast of security.
Home Minister also spoke to the CM on phone last night and was understood to have asked him to provide the safety of people in Karnataka.
The Bangalore city railway station was seen thousands of people from North Eastern states looking for the trains four journey to their homes as rumors spread that some people from the state had been subjected to attacks in the city, which was promptly denied by local police.
Despite government assurance, rush to Guwahati continues as panic gripped people from North Eastern states boarded trains to Guwahati in hordes yesterday from Karnataka due to fear of life despite the government assuring them to provide total security.
